Ember + Clay Handcrafted Goods was born as a passion project. I grew up in a household where candles were not allowed – as many on the market at the time were unclean and even harmful to our developing lungs. (One study showed that burning candles made from parrafin wax is just as harmful as inhaling second hand smoke.)
One day I stumbled across a video on candle making and creating a totally clean, family safe candle, and I realized it was something that I could do. As a result, all of our candles are made with 100% soy wax, natural cotton and soot free wicks, and high quality phthalate + paraben free, clean fragrance oils. While pouring candles started out as a mission to bring the joy of different fragrances into my family’s lives, it quickly expanded. Before I knew it, I was making candles for my wedding and after a few seasons of gifting everyone candles I knew I had my business niche. Since then, candle making has expanded to soaps, bath soaks, and jewelry, with plans to add more products in the near future!
As I’ve grown older I’ve noticed that scents and fragrances are one of the things that bring back childhood memories most vividly. Because of this, I set out to make candles that are not only toxin free but meaningful and nostalgic. While experimenting with a fragrance oil that reminded me of a glazed donut, it threw me back to post-church service Sunday trips to the local donut shop with my family. Thus, our best-selling “Sunday Morning Donut Shop” candle was born. All of our candle fragrances have stories like that, listed at the bottom of their product page. If it’s not a nostalgic scent for me, then it’s a nostalgic scent for someone that is close to me.

Ember + Clay is simple in the sense that it describes exactly what we sell. Candles create embers and clay is used to create our jewelry. But it’s more than that. Our name encapsulates our Christian views and values. As Christians we are to be embers burning for the Lord, with our embers fanning into a flame, spreading His Word. Clay is also Biblical in the sense that we are clay in the hands of the Lord, the Potter.
Welcome to Ember + Clay! We are so excited you’re here! I’m Alyssa and together with my new husband Jeff, we run Ember + Clay. At the moment, I wear quite a few hats in our business including; maker, accountant, salesman, marketing, inventory, social media manager, and product photography. Jeff is the manpower and the go to for physical labor, but he’s also the brain behind the website and a great salesman. (He’s also been known to play a big role in financing my projects as well…) A few things we love: swimming (me), soccer (Jeff), our families, old arcades, scrabble, NCIS, and being active in our local church.
